Counselling is a collaborative process or a journey between a client and a counsellor, based on a foundation of trust that is aimed at addressing the client's problems or situations. It involves five key areas: building a strong rapport between the client and counsellor, assessing the problem or situation, setting counselling goals, implementing intervention techniques, and concluding with termination and follow-up.
The role of the counsellor is to accompany the client throughout this process, by understanding the underlying causes of their problem or situation. Together, they identify goals and explore potential solutions to manage or overcome the issue in a healthy and manageable way. The counsellor utilizes intervention techniques tailored to the client's needs, helping them work towards achieving their counselling goals. If the original goals prove unattainable, new goals are set through collaboration between the client and counsellor.
Once the client has achieved their counselling goals, the counsellor initiates the termination process. This involves gradually reducing the frequency of sessions and conducting periodic follow-up sessions to ensure the client's continued well-being. Eventually, the counselling process or journey comes to an official end, marked by the completion of the therapeutic work and the client's successful progress towards their goals.
